Why you need an architect

Architects are a pitiful bunch. Not only are we lowly paid (yes, architects aren't very rich), but our profession is at large greatly unappreciated in most communities.

Today, I am going to raise awareness on why you need an architect. These are mostly excerpts from an RAIA brochure I got from my office today.

Why do you need an architect?

1. Architects have the qualifications, professional training, vision and experience to manage the entire design and construction process. A minimum of five (yes, five!) years of uni training, mandatory practical experience and a registration exam separates architects from other, less qualified building designers.

2. An architect will help you set a viable and realistic budget - this step is often underestimated in its importance. Some clients propose a crappy budget, yet they don't understand why they can't get a mansion. Come on, you can't pay peanuts and expect a house made from gold; architects need to eat also! Others include managing consultants (eg. engineers) and inspecting the work to ensure you get the quality you expect.

3. Architects see the big picture. An architect will help you define and create what you want to build, present options you may never have considered and help you get the most for your budget. Remember, architects don't merely design, they create environments that define you and how you like to live and work.

4. Architect-designed buildings are generally healthier places; places that are better for you; and flexible, so that your building can grow and change as your needs change. Architect-designed buildings are more energy-efficient, cheaper to operate and easider to maintain and adapt throughout their lifespan than traditional structures.

So in short, the moral of the story today is[if you don't remember anything I've said earlier]....

...treat your architect friends nicely...

otherwise you'll get a house like this :
