8 limbed goddess

Nov. 5: Lakshmi sits in her mother Poonam's lap as she poses with her father, Shambhu, and brother, Mithilesh.

Nov. 6: Dr. Sharan Patil, right, talks to Lakshmi, left, at the Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore, India before surgery.

Bangalore, India, November 8, 2007—An undated CT scan released on Thursday by the Sparsh Hospital shows the skeletal structure of two-year-old Lakshmi before she underwent reconstructive surgery.

The girl was born with four arms and four legs because she had been joined at the pelvis to a "parasitic twin" who had stopped developing in her mother's womb.

A team of more than 30 surgeons removed the extra limbs, transplanted a kidney from the nonviable twin, and reconstructed the pelvic area in a 24-hour operation, the Associated Press reported.

Lakshmi, who hails from the eastern Indian state of Bihar, was revered by some in her village as a reincarnation of the four-armed Hindu goddess of the same name.

I believe that this is a beautiful thing actually, this girl was born with extra limbs in a very poor place however despite all that she is up against she has the chance to live a normal life
